About Pencils Down

Why I Built It

I studied mathematics at the University of Chicago and scored a 1570 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT, on my first try. But Pencils Down really came from years of working with students, and it still does.

I kept running into the same gap: there was not enough hard, representative practice for where the digital SAT was heading.

Plenty of resources teach the fundamentals well. Once a student is strong, the questions turn repetitive. They know every concept involved and still stall when a familiar idea shows up in an unfamiliar structure.

What they need is practice connecting ideas they learned separately, spotting the same structure in a new form, and picking the right tool when the question does not name one.

I built Pencils Down to develop that ability.

About Me

I’m Armaan Singh, the founder of Pencils Down Labs.

I tutor mathematics, physics, SAT and ACT students, and have for more than seven years. Over 1,000 hours of SAT and ACT instruction so far.

I am still teaching every week, which is the part that keeps this current. The digital SAT is recent enough that what a strong student actually finds hard on it is something you learn from watching them, not something you can settle once and write down.

The math background shapes how I write problems. The tutoring taught me where students hesitate, and why recognizing a solution is not the same as producing one.

This is what I wanted for my own students. I could not find it, so I built it.
